Gatwick United FC has launched a new campaign to encourage more girls into the game and organized football trials for girls in Horley.
Just one season after launching its first girls-only team, the club has embarked on the ambitious challenge to play three teams in the Sussex County Women & Girls Football League next season.
Gatwick United’s U11 and U13 teams are the only teams in the town to be exclusively for girls.
Cristian Paraschiv, the club’s chairman said: “We know there are lots of girls in and around Horley who are keen to play football but are not interested in playing in a mixed team and are unsure of what options are open to them.
“We hope that by organizing football trials for girls we’ll expand our teams, we’ll encourage lots of new girls to get involved in the sport, learn new skills, make new friends and gain confidence.”
Gatwick United launched its first girls’ team last season, a year after the club was established and, despite being in its first year, the Under 12s team finished fifth in the league.
The teams can be found training in the unmistakable purple or azure blue kit every Saturday morning between 09:00 am to 10:30 am and 10:30 am to 12:00 pm at Court Lodge with coaches Karen & Claire at the U11’s team and Anthony, Charlie & Cristian to the U13’s team.
The girls spend the session developing skills and learning new ones before putting them to the test in a practise match, and their efforts can often be seen on the club’s social media channels.
“We have a great group of girls and we are all very excited to welcome new players to our friendly teams,” Karen added.
“It really doesn’t matter what experience you have – whether you’ve played competitive football before or have just kicked a ball around in the back garden, to us it is all about having fun while learning.”
